Lead generation or sales lead generation is the process of finding potential customers for your business so that you can sell to them. Classically it is the job of marketing to generate leads and the job of sales to close those leads so that they become paying customers.

Lead generation on the internet can be an automated process: targeted traffic is driven to a lead generation web page where the sales prospect is incentivised to provide their contact details. This often done by means of a squeeze page.

If the business provides ecommerce facilities then effective websites will not only generate a sales lead but also convert that lead into a paying customer immediately. How effective a web page is at doing this depends on its conversion capabilities.
